Since their introduction polo shirts have become closet staples for almost every modern man. The buttoned placket and collar of the shirt will always remain timeless and denotes the classic polo aesthetic, but top brands are always seeking to improve the actual performance and comfort of the garment. In addition to classic fashion and street style, polos are synonymous with sports and smart looking sportswear. Golfers want a fabric that protects them from the outside elements but also looks luxurious and stylish enough to go from the green to the clubhouse.

When looking for a great polo, ensure that the garment is high-performance. It shouldn’t just be about the classic polo style, it should be about the material and gauge of the material. Depending on the climate you live in (or are planning on visiting), you will want to get a fabric that protects you from the elements. With merino wool and knitwear, keep in mind that higher the gauge is, the lighter the fabric. Also, for the ultimate test, look into the fabric makeup. While many companies market their fabrics as merino wool, they are often merino wool blends. These are often made of synthetic materials, which as less breathable, don’t offer the properties of merino wool, and won’t last as long as a high-quality garment.

Romeo Merino is thrilled to be featured in this month's edition of Golf Plus Magazine. Discover all about the best shirts for golfers (and what makes a high-performance shirt) in their online edition (here) or peruse the feature below.

It’s almost that time of the year when four-leaf clovers, green beer galore, and one of the year’s most fun and festive holidays take center stage. In honor of Saint Patrick, Ireland’s most celebrated and honored patron saint, the 17th of March always brings the spirit of the Irish, and the excitement and activities surrounding it are pure gold. Get ready to don your green gear, because this year Saint Patty’s Day we’ve put together a guide for our favorite libations and foods in honor of the holiday:

The Classic Irish Coffee

Yes, green beer is a Saint Patty’s Day staple, but the classic Irish Coffee is a great accompaniment (or nightcap)  for something a little on the sophisticated side. Rumored to be first created by Joe Sheridan in 1942, the legend goes that Mr. Sheridan was a chef at Foynes Port, an airbase for transatlantic flights that was a stopover for longer flights to refuel. Due to weather conditions, passengers would have to stay for the night and a restaurant was created to cater to these passengers, who were often Hollywood legends and politicians. One night, Mr. Sheridan wanted to create something for the cold, tired passengers, and the first Irish coffee was born. The perfect blend of rich coffee and smooth Irish whiskey, it’s a drink that combines two of our favorite vices, caffeine and whiskey.

Recipe

  • 4-ounces of rich, fresh-brewed coffee
  • 1.5-ounce Irish whiskey
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1-ounce heavy cream (lightly whipped)
  • Place the sugar into a warmed glass. Add the hot coffee and stir until dissolved. Add the Irish whiskey and stir again. Float the lightly whipped heavy cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.

Irish Whiskey Sangria

Brandy is often added to classic sangrias, so we figured Irish whiskey would be an unexpected and tasty twist that’s perfect for the holiday. Fitting for springtime, crisp and refreshing fresh fruits, white wine, and a splash of effervescent soda water makes this the perfect choice for day drinking while green-hued fruits and fresh mint give it a splash of green color.

Recipe:

  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 2 oz Irish whiskey
  • 1 green apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 peach, thinly sliced
  • 1 kiwi, thinly sliced
  • Large handful of fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped
  • 1 bottle of dry white wine
  • 12 oz soda water

Mix the sugar, whiskey, and a quarter of the bottle of wine in a pitcher Wior jug and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add peach, apple, kiwi, and fresh mint and top with the remaining wine. Chill at least one hour. When ready to serve, top with the sparkling soda and add the fruits and mint into glasses for individual servings.

Soft Beer Pretzels & Cheese Sauce

Is there any brew more synonymous with Ireland than Guinness? Considered by many as a national icon, the delicious, rich stout was first brewed in Dublin in the mid-eighteenth century and has since become the globe’s most famous stout. We’ve paired the rich malty taste brew with salty, cheesy flavors for the ultimate Saint Patrick’s Day snack. And if you’ve been missing your favorite pubs and Irish dive bars as much as we have, then these addictive treats are just what you need.

Recipe:

For the Pretzels:

  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons of yeast
  • 1 cup Guinness beer
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter softened
  • 10 cups water
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon coarse salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Mix the flour, sugar, and yeast until combined. Heat Guinness to 120°F (or temperature listed on your brand of yeast) to the flour, sugar, and yeast. Add salt and 1 tablespoon of softened butter and mix until the dough comes together. Transfer mixture to a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and allow to rise (mixture should double in size). Preheat the oven to 450°F. Cut the dough into eight portions and roll into a pretzel shape. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil and add baking soda. Quickly boil the pretzels (about 30 seconds each) and then place the quick-boiled pretzels onto a baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake 10-12 minutes.

For the Cheese Sauce

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of Guinness
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 3 teaspoons dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (shredded)

In a medium-sized saucepan, create a roux by heating two tablespoons of unsalted butter and then adding 3 tablespoons of flour. Add Guinness and stir. Add dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Once the sauce has thickened to the point that it coats the back of a wooden spoon, add the shredded cheese and stir until melted completely. Serve immediately.

Corned Beef & Cabbage Sliders

Put a fun and festive twist on the classic Irish dish by turning it into perfect little party food bites. Featuring two of the Emerald Isle’s most famous staples, these sandwiches will have everyone grabbing for seconds, thirds, and fourths….

*Recipe courtesy of Delish.com

Recipe:

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 head cabbage, cut into small wedges
  • 1 bottle Guinness (or other beer)
  • 8 ciabatta rolls (or potato rolls)
  • 1 jar dijon mustard
  • 1 lb. corned beef

Preheat the oven to 350°F. As it heats, place a skillet on medium-high heat to warm. Add olive oil and sear the cabbage wedges on both sides (about 1 minute each). Place a cooling rack on top of a baking sheet. Place the cabbage wedges on the cooling rack, then pour the Guinness through the holes of the cooling rack so it fills the bottom of the baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the oven and cook cabbage for 20 minutes, until the edges have browned slightly. Assemble the sandwiches: Slice the ciabatta rolls in half. Spread dijon mustard on one side, top with slices of corned beef and cabbage. Serve.

Even though this spring is a little different than most, we’re still grateful for warmer weather, good vibes, and the magic of the season. With the arrival of spring blooms, melting snow, and sunnier days come cooler cocktails, more time with friends and family, and the intangible feeling of celebration and new hope. Here are some of our favorite things to help you celebrate the season:

It’s vibrant, light, and has an effervescent finish thanks to the prosecco and soda water, making it easy to drink anytime and anywhere. It’s an ideal choice for day drinking and toasting with friends.

Our Favorite Springtime Activity: Picnic in the Park

Spring Activities Guide: Picnic in the Park

With everything going on in the world, a picnic in the park is a great option for a safe springtime activity. Take your friends and family for some always important sunshine and vitamin D and indulge in great food, great, company, and great drinks (might we recommend the aforementioned Aperol Spritz?). If you’re looking for the ultimate romantic gesture to impress your significant other, it’s the ultimate thoughtful (and cost-effective) gesture. Here are some of our favorite picnic staples for an easy and stress-free menu:

Cheese and Charcuterie: Always impressive and easy to transfer, a selection of cheese, charcuterie, and crackers are a perfect picnic option to nibble on throughout the day.

Gourmet Sandwiches: Sandwiches don’t have to be boring. Spice them up with choice cuts of meats, fancy spreads, and gourmet options like brie and apple, tarragon chicken salad, or pesto, Roma tomato, and buffalo mozzarella.

Cold Pasta Salad: A great option for a hot day, a delicious pasta salad is easy to transport and stress-free. Make it extra filling with healthy proteins like grilled chicken or shrimp.

Our Favorite Spring Accessory: The Perfect Scarf

Spring Activities Guide: Romeo Merino Wool Scarf

For the ultimate style upgrade, grab a scarf to instantly add polish and swagger to any look. Though it may seem crazy to add layers as the temperatures rise, the right scarf can actually help to keep you cool. For the perfect choice opt for merino wool fibers, which naturally adapt to the outside elements, giving them the unique ability to help stabilize body temperature, no matter the conditions. During cooler seasons, the fabric insulates and keeps you warm. On hotter days, it transports sweat from the skin and releases humidity to help keep you cool and dry. Our unisex scarves are crafted from our signature merino wool, finished with ribbed detailing, and come in an assortment of bold colors and classic neutrals to complement every style.

Life is hectic. Between impressing your boss, maintaining a healthy social life, and juggling home and financial responsibilities, spending additional time worrying about your appearance shouldn’t add to the stress. However, looking polished has further-reaching effects; from the way that you’re perceived by others to the way you exude your inner confidence to the world. In order to achieve your best looks with minimal time and stress, we’ve assembled these quick and easy clothing hacks to make your day as stress-free and seamless as possible.

Instant Style Upgrades: Quick Clothing Hacks for Men

Roll Up Your Sleeves

A properly rolled-up sleeve allows you to maintain a formal look during warmer seasons, take your outfit from business to casual, and ensure that your pricey dress shirt doesn’t succumb to dreaded ink stains. Even better, it adds signature style and a modern touch to a more tailored outfit (and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it highlights your hard-earned physique). However, improperly rolled sleeves can look sloppy and unrefined. In order to ensure that your sleeves are always on point, follow these quick, fail-safe steps:

  1. Unbutton any buttons on the sleeve and cuffs.
  2. Flip back the cuff and then roll the sleeve using the cuff to set the width.
  3. Ensure that you smooth out any creases or wrinkles.
  4. If the inside of the cuff as a contrasting print, show just a hint of the inside pattern.
  5. Ensure that there are several visible inches of the wrist to ensure that the look is intentional and it doesn’t appear as if your shirt simply doesn’t fit.
  6. Never roll your sleeves under a sports jacket. Instead, opt for this look when you’re rocking a cardigan vest or are wearing just a simple button-down.
Instant Style Upgrades: Quick Clothing Hacks for Men - How to Roll a Sleeve

Try High-Low Dressing

Look street chic while still maintaining the style of a classic gentleman with high-low dressing. The term describes the art of combining formal and casual clothing to balance stuffiness with casual street style and blurs the lines between expensive and affordable pieces. For reference, think of Justin Timberlake rocking a tailored suit with white leather sneakers. The look is effortless defined. For some of our favorite pairings, opt for a graphic tee paired with a sleek sports jacket, jeans and a blazer, formal trousers with a simple, fitted polo, or trousers with casual sneakers and a classic cardigan sweater.

Create a Trademark Color Palette

As a quick and easy way to define your own personal sense of style and create a signature look, opt for a preferred color palette. Not only will it save you money and time by giving your closet easy, endless options to mix and match, but it will also become a trademark of your personal style. Choose your color palette based on what tones you feel most confident in and which colors you’re automatically drawn to. You may already have a great base sitting in your closet that you can build upon. For a solid start, choose a selection of about three to five colors that will make up your wardrobe and compliment each other. If you’re a fan of neutrals, opt for a variety of grays, creams, tans, and black. If you prefer to make a statement with more vibrant colors, choose a selection of bold jewel tones that can all easily pair with a dark pair of pants. Obviously, having a signature palette doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself to only these colors, but they can act as a quick guideline to follow for stress-free shopping, packing, and getting dressed daily.
