LET’S GET WHISKEY

“Whiskey is liquid sunshine.” – George Bernard Shaw

In honor of everyone’s favorite bold spirit, we’re clarifying any confusion surrounding this gentleman’s staple and have curated a list of some of our favorite whiskey cocktails.

What exactly is the difference between bourbon, rye, whiskey, and scotch??? First, we must understand how whiskey is made. Whiskey is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from a fermented grain mash that’s typically aged in wooden casks. The difference between rye, bourbon, scotch, and whiskey comprises of a variety of factors, including what the mash is comprised of, how it’s distilled, what type of cask is used, and how long it is aged for. We know that’s a lot to take in, so we’ve included a quick cheat sheet below:

Bourbon: Bourbon whiskey is made from a mash consisting of at least 51% corn, and can only be called bourbon if it is made in the United States. Bourbon can be no more than 62.5% alcohol when it is placed inside wooden casks to age.

Rye: According to Liquor.com, “rye whiskey is made from at least 51% rye, while bourbon is made from at least 51% corn. The higher percentage of corn makes the bourbon sweeter and smoother. (You can easily taste the difference if you make one Manhattan with bourbon and another with rye.) Both spirits are also aged in new, charred, American-oak barrels.”

Whiskey vs. Whisky:  The Scots spell it ‘whisky’ and the Irish spell it ‘whiskey,’ with an extra 'e'. Scotch is technically whisky that has been distilled and matured in Scotland and is made from malted barley aged in oak barrels for three years or more. Scotch is known for its smokiness and is often touted as an ‘acquired taste,’ while Irish Whiskey is known for a smoother taste and is more commonly triple distilled

Now that you’re a whiskey expert, here are some of our favorite whiskey libations:

Old Fashioned

LET’S GET WHISKEY: Old-Fashioned

Is there any more iconic staple than a perfectly made old-fashioned? It’s the cocktail version of comfort food and it’s a bonafide classic. The drink’s origins stem from the mid-1800s when it was simply known as a Whiskey Cocktail. The mixed drink was simply made of sugar, ice, and a lemon twist. The recipe still remains mostly the same, but with a dash of Angostura bitters to add depth and counteract the sugar.

Recipe:

  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 2 ounces bourbon or Scotch Whiskey
  • Orange peel
  • Add the sugar, bitters, and water into a rocks glass, and stir until sugar is nearly dissolved.
  • Fill the glass with ice cubes, add the scotch whiskey or bourbon, and gently stir to combine.
  • Garnish with an orange peel.

Mint Julep

LET’S GET WHISKEY: Mint Julep

This classic cocktail, which many tout as the unofficial drink of the South, brings visions of horses, big hats, and fancy gatherings. It was originally viewed as a primarily upper-class drink due to the silver or pewter cup it was always served in and it’s synonymous with the Kentucky Derby (it became the official drink of the event in 1938). The refreshing libation consists primarily of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint, and even though it’s a must every September, we like to enjoy it all-year-round.

Recipe:

  • 1.3 oz Bourbon
  • .75 oz simple syrup or 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3-4 fresh mint leaves and a sprig of mint for garnish
  • Crushed ice (not cubed)
  • Bruise the mint leaves in the bottom of a julep cup with the sugar or simple syrup. Add crushed ice and half of the bourbon. Stir to chill the julep cup. Top with additional ice and the remaining bourbon and continue to stir until the outside of the cup begins to freeze. Garnish with the mint sprig.

Irish Coffee

LET’S GET WHISKEY: Irish Coffee

Rumored to be first created by Joe Sheridan in 1942, this hot beverage is the perfect pick me up on a chilly evening. The legend goes that Mr. Sheridan was a chef at Foynes Port, an airbase for transatlantic flights that was a stopover for longer flights to refuel. Due to weather conditions,  passengers would have to stay for the night and a restaurant was created to cater to these passengers, who were often Hollywood legends and politicians. One night, Mr. Sheridan wanted to create something for the cold, tired passengers, and the first Irish coffee was born. The perfect blend of rich coffee and smooth Irish whiskey, it’s a drink that combines two of our favorite vices: caffeine and whiskey.

Recipe

  • 4-ounces of rich, fresh-brewed coffee
  • 1.5-ounce Irish whiskey
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1-ounce heavy cream (lightly whipped)
  • Place the sugar into a warmed glass. Add the hot coffee and stir until dissolved. Add the Irish whiskey and stir again. Float the lightly whipped heavy cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.

Not only does it add function to any closet and keep you warm during cooler seasons, but it can upgrade and add personal style to any outfit. Whether you’re seeking a relaxed weekend outfit or are looking to take your office attire to the next level, a classic cardigan is the perfect piece to add panache to any look. For those who fear that they can’t rock this timeless staples without looking dated, here are some of our favorite fresh and modern ways to rock the classic cardigan:

The Art of the Cardigan: Romeo Merino V-Cardigan

The Perfect Fit:

First and foremost, it’s imperative to find the right fit for the look you want to achieve. A looser style creates a more relaxed and casual appearance, perfect for a weekend jaunt, while a more fitted cardigan works amps up a three-piece suit or a pair of tailored slacks and a button-down shirt. We recommend having both options available so you can always dress up or down your look. For the most versatile option, opt for cardigans made of 100% merino wool. With natural temperature-regulating properties, these pieces can be comfortably worn year-round.

Street Style:

With a streamlined, simple design, cardigans scream versatility and can be styled in numerous ways. The best aspect of the cardigan is it can make you look relaxed, casual, and still polished on the weekends. And with a wide array of colors (from toned-down neutrals to bold, bright colors), you can choose a cardigan that best fits your own personal style and complements your existing wardrobe. Pair your color of choice with a graphic tee, a pair of sneakers, and your favorite jeans for a cutting-edge street look. If you want something slightly more refined, opt for chinos and a solid colored, slim-fit tee.

Semi-Formal:

Perfect for smart-casual occasions, such as a day in the office, a business lunch, or a cocktail party, a fitted cardigan pairs beautifully over a button-up shirt, trousers, and your favorite dress shoes. Always remember to mindfully pair your color combinations so the pieces complement each other rather than clash and fight for attention. Explore some of our favorite color combinations at our previous blog post here

Suit Up:

Soften the look of a classic suit while still maintaining its style and formality by swapping out the usual waistcoat for a cardigan. Far more comfortable and functional, a soft cardigan will keep you warmer during the winter months and will provide any suit with a more modern and cozy aesthetic. Just remember to select a fitted piece, so your suit fits perfectly and you avoid looking too bulky.

If you’re looking to woo that special someone in your life (or maybe just want to make a stellar impression on a first date), then cooking them a home-cooked meal is a surefire way to impress. Cooking is a language of love and there is simply nothing sexier than a man who can cook. You don’t necessarily have to be the next Bobby Flay or run to enroll in culinary classes, but having a few fail-safe recipes in your arsenal is always a good plan. Whether you want to cook up a romantic dinner for two, impress your future (or current in-laws), or even just have a great solo meal during your next Netflix session, here are some of our favorite recipes for you to easily master.

The Legendary Engagement Chicken:

Three Foolproof Dishes to Impress Your Date: Engagement Chicken

In 2004 Glamour posted a story that has since become infamous among its readers: The Engagement Chicken. The legend told of a time back in 1982 when an assistant was given a recipe for an unforgettably delicious roast chicken. The assistant cooked the recipe for her boyfriend, who proposed within the month. The assistant then passed the recipe to three more of her colleagues who also received engagement rings after whipping up the legendary bird. Though the story has no doubt become exaggerated and there were likely major outliers that led to the engagements, the recipe was published in 2004 and the story of the “Engagement Chicken” lived on. If this recipe is good enough to get a ring, just imagine how impressive it will be on any other occasion. Even better, it’s inexpensive and easy to master.

Recipe (posted from Glamour Magazine):

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken (approximately 4 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, plus 3 whole lemons—including 1 sliced for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon kosher or coarse sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (4 rosemary sprigs, 4 sage sprigs, 8 thyme sprigs, and 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley)
  1. Position an oven rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 400°F. Remove the giblets from the chicken, wash the chicken inside and out with cold water, then let the chicken drain, cavity down, in a colander for 2 minutes.
  2. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Place the chicken breast-side down in a medium roasting pan fitted with a rack and pour the lemon juice all over the chicken, both inside and out. Season the chicken all over with salt and pepper inside and out.
  3. Prick 2 whole lemons three times each in three different places with a fork and place them deep inside the cavity. Chicken cavity size may vary, so if one lemon is partly sticking out, that's fine. (Tip: If the lemons are stiff, roll them on the countertop with your palm before pricking to get the juices flowing.)
  4. Put the chicken in the oven, lower the oven temperature to 350°F, and roast, uncovered, for 15 minutes.
  5. Remove the roasting pan from the oven. Using tongs or two wooden spoons, turn the chicken breast- side up. Insert a meat thermometer in the thigh, and return the chicken to the oven and roast for about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the meat thermometer reads 180°F and the juices run clear when the thigh is pricked with a fork. Continue roasting if necessary. Keep in mind that cooking times in different ovens vary; roasting a chicken at 350°F takes approximately 18-20 minutes per pound, plus an additional 15 minutes.
  6. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving. Pour the juices from the roasting pan on top of the sliced chicken. Garnish with fresh herbs and lemon slices.

Spaghetti Bolognese:

Three Foolproof Dishes to Impress Your Date: Bolognese

A hearty and comforting meal that’s perfect for Fall, this rich pasta dish is an easy to make meal that will allow you to bring the romance of an Italian bistro straight to your home. For extra points, throw on an accompanying Spotify playlist or make it a dinner and a movie night (might we recommend Lady and the Tramp for super romantic vibes). Though the recipe takes hours to fully develop the flavors, the actual cooking time is short, giving you time to relax and socialize while the rich flavors of the bolognese sauce fill your kitchen.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 carrot, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, finely chopped
  • 1 lb. ground beef (or ground beef substitute for a meatless option.)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 c. dry white wine
  • 1 (15-oz.) can crushed tomatoes
  • 3 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 2 c. chicken or beef broth
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 c. milk (whole)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley for garnish
  • 1 pack of dried spaghetti
  1. In a large pan or dutch oven heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot, and celery, and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in beef and garlic, breaking up meat with back of a spoon. Cook until no longer pink and slightly browned.
  2. Add wine, and bring mixture to a simmer. Cook until wine is mostly reduced. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, stock, and bay leaf, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
  3. Cook pasta according to package directions.
  4. Discard bay leaf, then gradually stir in milk. Cover with a lid slightly ajar and simmer, stirring occasionally for  45 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and serve with pasta. Top with parmesan cheese and fresh parsley.

Pan-Seared Salmon and Roasted Potatoes:

Three Foolproof Dishes to Impress Your Date: Salmon

For a lighter option that’s perfect for date night, opt for a delicious and quick seared salmon. The secret is a super hot pan to get the skin restaurant-quality crispy. Pair it with dry white wine and crunchy potatoes for a perfectly balanced dinner option. Super quick and easy to make, this is sure to become one of your favorite weeknight staples.

Salmon Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 salmon fillets with skin on (6-oz portions are ideal for cooking)
  • 2 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Fresh Lemon
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Pat the salmon filets with a paper towel to remove moisture (this is an important step  for the perfect crispy skin) and season with salt and pepper
  3. Heat the oil in a cast iron, oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat until the oil hot and shimmering.
  4. Cook the salmon, skin side up for about 3 minutes. Do not touch or move the fish filets as they cook, this is key for the perfect texture and crust.
  5. Flip the fillets and reduce the heat to low to medium heat. Continue cooking for about 3 minutes more then transfer to the oven for 3-4 more minutes until cooked through. Top with lemon wedges for garnish.

Roasted Potato Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 points of baby potatoes
  • 3 large cloves of garlic, cracked with skin removed
  • 2-3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees
  2. Cut potatoes in half and combine with garlic, olive oil, rosemary, salt, and pepper
  3. Roast potatoes until cooked through. We like our potatoes extra crispy, so we usually roast them for about 35 minutes, but for softer, more tender potatoes roast for about 20 minutes.

There are a few key staples that should always be in your accessories inventory: a classic, high-quality scarf, a go-to wristwatch, and the perfect pair of shades. Like all of the best men’s accessories, sunglasses combine form and function, giving every outfit an instant upgrade while providing important protection from harmful UV rays. Legend has it that the modern sunglasses were first created on Hollywood film sets as actors needed eye protection during their long hours filming in the sun. But what exactly makes for the perfect set of sunglasses? It’s not about the brand, material, or even the color. The most important aspect when choosing your sunglasses is the shape of the frames and how well they flatter your individual face shape. Even though we all may want to channel our inner Maverick and don a classic set of aviators, sometimes they may not be the most flattering. We’ve created a quick cheat sheet to help you discover the best shades for every face.

Oblong

If your face is longer than it is wide and you have rounded cheekbones and softer jawlines, then your best bet will be squared-off and rectangular shades that add the illusion of width to your face. Any shades that drop down like a teardrop are best to avoid, as they will make your face look even longer. Rectangular shapes, however, have a much more angular shape that allows them to add structure and definition to rounder jawlines.

Men's Sunglasses: Square Frames

Inverted Triangle

Like the oblong shape, an inverted triangle’s face shape is longer than wide. However, this face shape is defined by a sharper jawline, which is usually the most narrow portion of the face. For reference, think Ryan Gosling. Rounded lenses work well with this shape, as well as semi-rimless frames that accentuate the upper face. If this is your face shape than lucky you. You get to rock the classic Top Gun teardrop aviators to perfection.

Men's Sunglasses: Round Frames

Round

If you have a round face shape, you’re in excellent company with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Zac Efron. For those with a rounder face, opt for shapes that create the illusion of length and angles. Skip any round frames and avoid extra-wide frames that add unnecessary width. Instead, look for shades that balance your natural curves with thin, straight lines and a natural curve at the end. For us, the most flattering for this shape is a square-shaped aviator with rounded edges.

Men's Sunglasses: Square Frames

Diamond

Those blessed with sharp angles, such as pronounced cheekbones and a well-defined jawline, should opt for classic Carreras, round, or rectangular shapes. Avoid any frames that are too squared off, as these can create harsh lines that fight with, rather than compliment your natural shape.

Men's Sunglasses: Rounded Frames

Square:

You have a square face shape if your head’s width and length are nearly the same and you have a square jaw. For inspiration, picture Henry Cavill, Rob Lowe, and Maverick himself (Tom Cruise). This is a great shape that pairs nicely with tons of frames. The only thing to keep in mind is to avoid frames that are too boxy. You can still opt for square or rectangular shades, just ensure that they have rounded edges to soften the overall look. Lighter colors and rounded shapes also are great counterparts to your natural angles.
