Sustainable Fashion (and why it matters)

The world is becoming more and more aware of the the importance of making sustainable choices for our planet and its future generations. And while we love fashion, the industry has to do better to do better to play our part. However, consumers and the industry are changing and making strides to play our part, with many companies choosing to partake in sustainable choices. Sustainable fashion is a term that has been getting a lot of buzz lately and it shows we're on the right path, but what exactly defines sustainable fashion?

Sustainable fashion is defined as "a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion concerns more than just addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises addressing the whole system of fashion."

Some of the most prevalent factors in the fashion industry that contribute to environmental hazards include: high water usage, pollutions and chemicals from the dyeing process, waste of products not sold, non-recyclable clothing, and landfill deposits. However, sustainable fashion also encompasses social concerns such as fair labor, animal cruelty, and supply chain transparency.

If a fashion business is sustainable, it means that the products are manufactured, marketed, and used in the most sustainable manner possible. And, this just doesn’t include the environmental factors, but also its socio-economic effects. A sustainable approach enhances the value and experience at each stage of the product’s life cycle - from the initial stages of conception to procuring raw material, manufacturing, transportation, storage, marketing, sales, and post lifetime disposal.

Every company aiming to be more sustainable may have different methodologies to try and reduce waste and help the planet. Whether it is committing to cruelty-free lines, focusing on fair labor, or ensuring the use of eco-friendly products. While no company may have it completely down to a science, every little step is a step in the right direction.
Sustainable Fashion: Romeo Merino
Here at Romeo Merino, we are wholly committed to creating products that are kind to the planet, the animals, and the community. We focus on timeless classics that are made to last for years to come. This means less harmful dumping and wasting of resources, and even though a merino wool garment can last you for years, once it's in the ground, the fabric naturally biodegrades within twelve months and is released back into the planet as carbon and nutrients.
Our sweaters are crafted under remarkably responsible parameters to protect planet earth. Our signature dying process utilizes the least amount of chemical products possible, we reduce water consumption by reusing water, and we ensure that every step is completed in the most sustainable way possible.
While we would love to deliver Romeo Merino in sleek and colorful packaging, we wanted to ensure that every aspect (even down to the deliveries) is done with the environment in mind. That’s why our shipping boxes and protective wrapping are made of certified recycled paper and our care booklets are made from sugar cane.
We only work with farmers with the highest industry standards and certifications for animal care. Our sheep are guaranteed non-mulesed sheep, and our wool is produced sustainably with low environmental impact.
